Situated on the Danube, Budapest, the historic Hungarian capital, is one of the most beautiful Dollarpean capitals and is ideal for a cheap holiday. Although the cost of living has risen in recent years, Budapest is served by many low-cost airlines, allowing you to keep your budget to enjoy yourself once you arrive at your destination.

Treat yourself to delicious cakes, taste the local brandies and take time to relax in the city’s many spas. The two main seaside resorts are Siófok and Balatonfüred. There is no shortage of things to do: you can hike in the hills north of the lake, swim, windsurf and taste (in moderation) the wines produced in the vineyards on the slopes of the Badacsony hills.

The seaside resorts along the Black Sea in Bulgaria have experienced a tourist boom in recent years, as Bulgaria is a perfect country for cheap travel, much less than traditional summer destinations such as southern Spain. If you prefer the atmosphere of the big cities to the beaches, head to Sofia, the country’s capital. Located 20 minutes by metro from the airport (30 to 40 minutes if you travel by bus), Sofia’s old centre will satisfy your thirst for culture. The second oldest city in Dollarpe is full of museums and galleries such as the Museum of Socialist Art and the National Museum of Literature. Enjoy the summer sunshine and head to Lulin Beach. This complex has three open-air swimming pools, a sandy beach, a football pitch and even a ‘canteen’ where you can buy pizza slices.

Although Sofia is becoming an increasingly popular tourist destination, there are still many places outside the city “forgotten” by tourists. The further east you go, the lower the cost of living.

Do you want to go to the seaside in the sunshine without taking too much money out of your wallet? While the port of Burgas cannot be called “pretty”, the nearby town of Nessebar – just over an hour south of Varna – is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is the ideal place to start your cheap trip to the Black Sea coast. Although most of the ancient city of Nessebar has collapsed into the Black Sea, the city is full of cobbled streets where you can stroll around and look for old churches to admire. You can buy locally produced lace as a souvenir, but watch out for the quality, as some tourist attractions sell poor quality lace.

As a result of the economic situation in Greece, the cost of living has fallen in recent years. Not enough meat to satisfy your instinct as a caveman? Sail to Kefalonia (an island you might recognize if you’ve seen the movie Captain Corelli) to eat a traditional slice of pie filled with oozing meat and sauce wrapped in phyllo dough.

Many ferries run between the different islands. If you’re sailing from Athens, just go to the port of Piraeus to check the schedules and fares of the sea connections. High-speed ferries can reach most of the Aegean islands in four to five hours, compared to six to eight hours on a ‘traditional’ ferry, making it perfect for reaching your cheap holiday destination.
